Legislation, in regard to the management of waste in the UK
, is progressive and rapidly evolving. Developments across the EU as well as global initiatives (Kyoto, UN Framework on Climate Change) all play their part in influencing how we manage our waste. The UK has traditionally relied heavily on landfill for waste disposal and the access and availablility of sites has restricted the development of re-use and recycling initiatives. However this is no longer the case and in Wales alone it is estimated that landfill capacity will have been fully utilised within the next 4-7 years. Legislation and regulation therefore has an important role to play in encouraging industry, businesses and houselholders to reduce, re-use and recycle waste and to encourage the developments in waste infrastructure and markets.
This section of the website gives an outline of current legislation and regulations with regard to waste management. It is important to note that new legislation and amendments to existing legislation are introduced fairly frequently and the information provided here may not be up to date and should not be regarded as a replacement for legal advice.
Duty of Care
Section 1 describes the waste management obligations for most businesses and organisations under the Duty of Care Regulations.
